Frequently Asked Questions

What you need to know before starting your video interview

An interview done over Skype requires interaction at the same time between you and the recruiter. This means despite you being able to do the interview from the comfort of your own home, you still need to schedule a time to be available.

Recorded video interview allow you to record your answers to the interview questions via your webcam in your own time through a video interview portal like The Needle's. This means you don't have to take time off work and you can do it remotely even in a different timezone. The recruiter can then assess your video interview in their own time which makes it much easier for all parties to manage.

You can use a modern laptop or desktop with a webcam, Android, iPad or iPhone. We do however recommend that you don't use older laptops or netbooks as their tend to not have enough power to process video and this will be frustrating for you.

When the recruiter sets the structure for the interview, they may enabled the re-record function which will give you one or two more attempts for each question. However this highlights the need to ensure you are thoroughly prepared for the interview. Know your CV inside out and ensuring that you have plenty of good examples ready to add to your answers.  If the recruiter has chosen not to enable the re-record function, then you will need to be prepared for anything and everything, so ensure you prepare as if you would for a face to face interview.

Dependent on how the recruiter has structured the interview, they may allow you to see the questions before you start the response process. If this is the case, there will be a section there to add speaker notes which will appear next to the recording box as you are recording your responses. If they don't allow you to see the questions you will still have some reading and thinking time to do a bit of preparation before the system will automatically start recording.

Wear what you would normally wear for a job interview. If you would wear a suit, then put on a suit -  whatever is appropriate for the viewer! You will never be over dressed for a video interview (ok perhaps a tux might be taking it too far!) but it's a professional interview so treat it that way and you can't go wrong.

Yes, lighting is very important. You need to ensure you have plenty of light on your face. Don't use the monitor as a light source. Your practice question allows you to see how you look in the camera. Webcams work similarly to a normal photographic camera - if you don't have enough light on the subject, the result will be substandard. Also, try not to sit where there is a light shining above your head or behind you as this will also cause the viewer to be unable to see your face.

Yes! Before every interview with The Needle, you have a practice question. You can record and re-record as many times as you like on this question until you get used to the technology. The recording DOES NOT go to the recruiter.
