Setting up your device
Setting up your equipment before participating in a video interview with The Needle's platform is important for a good result. Continue reading to get all the tips. If you want to check out our tips on lighting, clothing, posture and content preparation, go to Preparation tips. This page is dedicated to setting up your hardware correctly.
Laptops and desktops
The very first thing you need to check before you start is to make sure you have a webcam available on your laptop or desktop. Sounds obvious right, but older laptops often don't have them. Or, you don't have one with your desktop. Avoid using older laptops or netbooks. These are ok for surfing the net, but not so good for processing video recording.
The Needle video interview recorder is built in Adobe Flash, which means you need to to have an up to date version of Flash on your computer before you start. You can download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player by clicking here.If you already have Flash installed, make sure it's up to date. For convenience, Google Chrome already has Flash integrated so provided your Chrome browser is up to date, Flash should be too.
Mobile phones and tablets
You can use The Needle Recorder video interview App to complete your video interview on an iPhone, iPad or Android device. Download the App from the App Store or Google Play Store and get started. Everything you need is catered for in the App. Click on the icons to the right and get started!
You can use a variety of different browsers but like Flash, you need to make sure you have the latest version of that browser on your computer. We recommend Internet Explorer version 10 or above or Google Chrome. You can also use Safari or Mozilla Firefox, but see the note below for Firefox.
NOTE: Firefox has recently changed the security settings for video playback using Adobe Flash. If you experience any difficulties using Firefox when making a video interview, you can change the settings as described here. By switching the Mozilla Adobe protected mode to OFF (default is ON), this security issue is fixed. The link above explains what to do - it only takes a few seconds to make the change. Alternatively, use Google Chrome instead.
Broadband speeds and connections
Not all internet connections are suitable for recording video interviews over. We strongly recommend you DO NOT USE public WiFi or 3G dongles as you will probably be sharing your Internet connection with many users, which means your connection speed will vary greatly. Internet connections have two directions - upstream and downstream. To record video you are using your upstream connection. To watch video, you are using your downstream connection. If you have any doubts, check your Internet connection with Speedtest.net. You must have at least 3 Mb/s downstream and 1 Mb/s upstream speeds for optimum performance. When using The Needle Recorder App on your mobile device, use a good WiFi connection rather than 3G or 4G for optimum results.
Finally, we recommend you don't use your work computer when connected to the company IT Network or via a VPN, as video upload is often blocked by the IT Department for obvious security reasons. Plus, it's probably not terribly appropriate to do your video interview at work!
Webcams and microphones
Laptop and desktop users will be asked to set up your webcam and microphone in a dedicated set up page. Just follow the instructions. Webcams and microphones are set up already on a mobile device so our App will ask you for permission to use both of these.
The practice question
The practice question is really important and is your opportunity to practice using the technology before you start the actual interview.
We do recommend you spend some time on the practice question. It's there to help you get used to using the technology. You can record and re-record as many times as you like on the practice question. No one else will see your recordings, just you!
Can I use my mobile device?
Of course! The Needle recorder is available in the App Store and Google Play Store. Use your iPhone, iPad or Android device.
Download the App FREE and when you receive an invitation to interview from a prospective employer, just cut and paste your unique passcode from the email into the login screen of the App and start the interview. It's that simple!
